The End of OTC Syrups: A Massive Regulatory Shockwave, and Why It’s Actually Good for Us

Image
The Indian Ministry of Health and Family Welfare’s decision to pull "Syrups" out of the exempted list under Schedule K of the Drugs Rules, 1945 , is easily one of the biggest regulatory shifts we’ve seen in years. By dropping the decades old exemption under the Drugs (Fifth Amendment) Rules, 2026 , the government has made it absolute: all liquid oral formulations now strictly require a doctor's prescription. No more walking into a neighborhood chemist to pick up a quick over-the-counter (OTC) bottle of cough formula or an antacid. While the immediate commentary focuses heavily on the raw transactional friction for urban consumers, the truest impact and why this policy is fundamentally necessary, lies across rural India. Historically, Schedule K was a practical compromise for a developing nation. Under Serial No. 13, the law allowed basic "household remedies" to be stocked and sold in remote villages (populations under 1,000) without requiring strict retail pharm...

[2nd June 2024] Interesting Things I Learnt This Week

Image
1. The Rubyglow pineapple : The Rubyglow pineapple, grown exclusively by Melissa's, is a mix between a normal pineapple and a Morada pineapple (that's usually inedible). The fruit, which was previously only available in Asia, features the pineapple's typically yellow center with a distinct ruby red colored outer shell. The rare fruit went viral and has now completely sold out by Fresh Del Monte.   My Take : The headlines about these limited-edition fruits are eye-catching, but the high price tag and quick sellout make it a minor story.  The real takeaway is the ongoing effort in genetic engineering to improve fruits – tastier, more nutritious, and longer-lasting.  This type of innovation holds the potential for significant global impact, compared to the more subtle changes LLMs might introduce. 2. Weather Union : Weather Union is a crowd-supported weather infrastructure project initiated by Zomato. It leverages a network of weather stations to collect real-time weather...

Defeat of truth in a Democracy

Well Nanavati Commision Report is out and there it goes, as expected proving innocence of Narendra Modi and validating the BJP stand. And as expected, all the hue and cry from Congress. Well it was a similar scene, with only the roles changed when Banerjee Report came. Similar hue and cry. I wonder if they talk sense and prove things instead of making empty noises. No I am not trying to support any one, but fact is that truth has died thanks to all the politics around the death of so many. I find it even more weird that most journalists never fail to mention that more than a thousand people died and most minority(it seems like only minority in India are the muslims. I wonder where do Jains, Sikhs, Buddhists and Christians go. I dont know where the fault lies. I dont know if these reports actually did any kind of study. I dont know if any of these reports did some scientific research and tests. I dont know if all these reports were written as any Sci-Fi writer does with all the research...

Creamy layer, redefined, literally

In what could be an amazing move, the UPA government is looming over the option of revising, what means a creamy layer. This new income limit is may be upto 6lakhs Now expect loads of unqualified and spoilt kids getting into the premier institutions only to be dropped or just managing to make hoola. Beware, they might even be your boss one day thanks to reservations. I dont know how reservation and equality go hand in hand.

This Congress government is communal, Now is that something unknown

The current Congress government is anything but secular. You cannot be secular just because you support a minority more than the majority and other minority communities. I have always believed that BJP was more secular than the current government. Now Taslima Nasreen has given her certificate of communality to the Congress Government. "I was put under tremendous stress but I could not speak out as I was under their (government) surveillance and could be harassed by them," she said in a choked voice. "The government is no better than religious fundamentalists," she said. If you want more proof of it, you can just look at whats happening in Andhra Pradesh. Total nationalization of all communities other than muslims and the mullas are given total control. God please help us. These guys are worse than anything they can be. Please give good sense to the people of India that they kick these people out of places of power and reverse the act...

What a joke Mr Singh

We heard some time back from our economist prime minister, Manmohan Singh that Indian CEOs are overpaid. Their salary should be brought under control . And now we have the latest news that 'Big pay hike for President, VP and Governors' . I am sure something is in line for MPs too. But then why crib over salary of the CEO who are going great work for the country and its people rather than the bureaucrats who are plainly killing off whatever is left out. Seems like one of those 'suits me well' attitude as they have for secularism and development. Doom Congress Doom, thats where you are headed to. Never is any educated Indian going to vote for you. The best way for u is to eliminate them tactically.

Is there a righteous voice left in India

I really felt pained when I browsed through the forums at expressindia.com and rediff.com . These are forums which are below each news topic. I felt there are only two kinds of people out there. One who hate Narendra Modi for all reasons known and unknown and others who loved him for reasons all known and unknown. Now what pains me is that instead trying to point that the opposition(Congress) is doing good work for farmers and all in other states like Maharashtra and AP(Well this indeed is with a lot of sarcasm). They are only trying to justify that Narendra Modi is a killer. Bloody hell if he is a killer, he is dangerous, what the hell is a central government there for. But then they are all sayers and never the doers. Unlike Modi who actually does something and talks a lot about other things. He does not clearly made a pro cotton farmer policy(Read here ). But sadly Congress feels its unnecessary to make its something of an issue. Instead it tried to make use of the standard Communa...

Who is a terrorist ?

Mr. Narendra Modi has asked a very valid question . I wonder how come no one ever asked it for so long. What is the future for Mr Afzal Guru. I get a feeling that this Congress government is waiting for another hijacking to happen and it is able to release Mr Afzal 'Inncocent' Guru. Why the heck is government taking the killing of brave Indian Jawans lite. I feel they are more concerned with getting the votes banks right than doing right thing. I dont feel anything wrong with the fact that Mr Modi is trying to talk the right stuff, to counter the acid attack on him carried out with the worst kind of degratory words rather than certain actions which were aught to be taken by the Congress Government in power. But I seriously doubt that taking sides on the terrorist(Making assumptions based on all info available to me). Its like you want to make the supporter of Dawood Ibrahim, the Prime Minister of India. People seem to have forgotten what Sanjay Dutt must have had received. He...

Meeting with IT Secretary, Govt. of Karnataka

Thanks to the blogging and the bloggers community especially Prashanth from Techbangalore.com I got invite to meet IT Secretary of Govt of Karnataka, Mr M.N. Vidyashankar. Frankly I wasnt much prepared for the conversation expect the fact I work for an IT company. Along with me were Hari , Arun and Prashanth . Mr M.N. Vidyashankar received us at his office. He started with great enthusiasm explaining us what Bangalore is for IT. He stated certain facts that showed how much IT meant for Karnataka. He was clear that IT could not be ignored at all, after all 26% of Karnataka's GDP comes from in there although to India's GDP it contributes a mere 4%. With 4.9lakh plus people employed by the industry it was bigger than the state which is around 4.5 lakhs. He told us that infrastructure crunch was the reason why around 18 months back heads started rolling. 10000 acre Knowledge City at Biradi is the outcome of that. Bigger plan is get 5 such self contained townships with over 6000...

Ram Ram....Yeah kya hai

WTF...thats what I said when I heard this http://www.ibnlive.com/news/govt-says-no-proof-ram-existed-vhp-seethes/48547-3.html . Amazing thing. Ram never existed. But dude how can we prove that we prove that Ram never existed. How can you prove that somebody some hundred thousand years ago existed. I cannot see your brains does that mean anything. I really cant say that. Its just an open question, a question of faith. And a country like India which is not secular. Yes its not secular because here's what Google returns from define:secular . I would say India is more of multi-religious. You need to respect the peoples sentiments and if there is mythology associated with any of the places you need to respect them. Now that Govenment is reviewing and calling back its affidavit I feel we need to rething what should be done in this non-secular multi religious India. But the blogospheres reaction was interesting. Some of them are here Did Lord Rama Exist? yet another goof up in...

Quota --- Do the ends really justify the means and vice versa

The true goal of the pro-quota politicians has been moved out of the cupboard by the senior advocate K Parasaran, appearing for the Tamilnadu Government. He made the true statement in court today. He said "They (upper caste) dominated for centuries and now they should suffer" Here comes the divide and rule policy of the pseudo-socialist politicians of India in full public view. Yes the Brahmins dominated the scene for centuries, now they should suffer. The cruel kings and nawabs must made to beg on the streets of India. They must realize that what they did was wrong. Bloody hell !! Ya thats the place from where you need to get these souls from on earth. What the fucking wrong did these young children do, that they should suffer. Gone are the days when the loan taken by a man continues to be paid by seven generations to come. Today a son is responsible for a loan taken by father. Well in true Deewar style I think I would like to tell Mr K Parasaran, "Jao pehle us aadmi k...
