[29th June 2025] Interesting Things I Learnt This Week

1.  The Illusion of Thinking  - A recent paper from Apple's Machine Learning Research team challenges the idea that Large Reasoning Models (LRMs) can truly "think." The researchers argue that current methods for evaluating these models, which often use standard math and coding problems, are flawed due to potential data contamination and a focus on final answers rather than the reasoning process. Using controllable puzzles to test the models, the study found that even the most advanced LRMs experience a complete collapse in accuracy when the problem's complexity passes a certain point. Counterintuitively, as problems became more difficult, the models' "thinking" effort decreased, suggesting they "give up" rather than reason more deeply. Llama 3.3 -  Llama 3.3 70B model offering similar performance to the Llama 3.1 405B model, allowing developers to achieve greater quality and performance on text-based applications at a fraction of the cost.  My Take : Meta continues to impress with each new release. Their recent claim that the 3.3 70B model performs as well as the 3.1 405B model is particularly noteworthy. This rapid progress suggests that these powerful models could soon be running on personal computers or even directly in web browsers.Meanwhile, OpenAI's recent move to introduce a $200 monthly subscription for advanced access to its models raises questions about its long-term strategy. While the initial novelty factor might justify such a premium, it seems excessive, especially for users in regions like India. Google says it’s made a quantum computing breakthrough that reduces errors - Google researchers have made a breakthrough in quantum error correction, which could pave the way for useful quantum computers. The main challenge in quantum computing has been the high error rate of the hardware, which prevents them from executing long and useful algorithms. The new research demonstrates that it is possible to add components to reduce these errors, which was previously thought to be impossible due to engineering limitations. This bolsters the idea that error correction is a viable strategy for building a useful quantum computer. My Take : While these advancements may seem incremental, they are crucial for the development of quantum computers. 1. The Genius Behind the Quantum Navigation Breakthrough - This is the World's First Unhackable Quantum GPS. Using the coldest atoms in the Universe, it may revolutionise the way we navigate. This Youtuber to got to go behind the scenes and see their device up close to try and understand just how important this breakthrough is. My Take : This video goes into more details about how quantum navigation works as well hits the home run in explaining why its really needed. I had also mentioned about Quantum Navigation in a previous post where IEEE had covered it. This video goes to explain more details of it and if you are a physics nerd, you would enjoy it.   2. 1. A Single Gold Bar Is Worth $1 Million for the First Time in History - It discusses why the price has gone up and what this means for the future. The price of a single gold bar has recently reached $1 million for the first time ever. This is because gold is seen as a safe investment during times of economic uncertainty. The article predicts that the price of gold will keep going up. My Take : Gold has always been seen as a safe investment in India. We have seen the Gold Bond which were introduced by Government of India which has become too popular to be supported by GoI. E-Gold is a safe way to keep gold especially since for folks who are buying to for purely investment purpose and not holding black money in India. I hope that the space becomes more reliable and competitive. 1. The Rubyglow pineapple : The Rubyglow pineapple, grown exclusively by Melissa's, is a mix between a normal pineapple and a Morada pineapple (that's usually inedible). The fruit, which was previously only available in Asia, features the pineapple's typically yellow center with a distinct ruby red colored outer shell. The rare fruit went viral and has now completely sold out by Fresh Del Monte.   My Take : The headlines about these limited-edition fruits are eye-catching, but the high price tag and quick sellout make it a minor story.  The real takeaway is the ongoing effort in genetic engineering to improve fruits – tastier, more nutritious, and longer-lasting.  This type of innovation holds the potential for significant global impact, compared to the more subtle changes LLMs might introduce. 2.   1. Nerves Project: The Nerves Project is a toolkit for building software for small devices (embedded systems) like routers or sensors. It combines Elixir, a powerful programming language, with a reliable runtime environment to make development easier. Imagine building with Legos instead of tinkering with wires. Nerves takes care of complex tasks like networking and device control, so you can focus on the unique features of your project. My Take: This is a very interesting project. Someone like Sun(now Oracle) tried doing something like this for Java and were not very successful IIUC. Would love these folks to succeed. Maybe this will be the turning point where Elixir finds its perfect use and widespread adoption. 2. New Prompt Engineering Technique using Star Trek references : This is a very interesting and pretty long article which goes into how talking about star trek makes LLM spit out better results.  My Take: The idea of using Star Trek references to enhance LLM performance is certainly intriguing. However, it also serves as a stark reminder of just how much we still have to learn about the inner workings of these complex models. While we can observe and utilize their outputs, the actual mechanics behind their decision-making processes remain shrouded in a degree of mystery. This lack of understanding doesn't deter me from seeking new ways to explore and understand LLMs. In fact, this unique approach only strengthens my curiosity and compels me to delve deeper into their capabilities and limitations. A few interesting things I learnt about this week are 1. Coffee Stains in LaTeX - This package provides an essential feature that LaTeX has been missing for too long: It adds coffee stains to your documents. A lot of time can be saved by printing stains directly on the page rather than adding them manually. My Take: There is too much fun to be had with LaTeX. I guess the rest of the world missed this wonderful piece of tech completely. These small and sometimes pointless tools are what really make any technology platform stand out among others, not because of the tech but the fact that its users are emotionally invested to build these kind of tech nuggets 2. Meshtastic - Meshtastic is a project that enables you to use inexpensive LoRa radios as a long range off-grid communication platform in areas without existing or reliable communications infrastructure. Some thoughts on LLMs

The comparison between the current stage of Large Language Models (LLMs) and the introduction of databases in the computer industry is related to the potential impact of LLMs on various applications and industries. Just as databases provided a foundation for various computer systems like Google Search and Gmail, LLMs are becoming a foundation for various language-related applications. Companies like Google have already demonstrated promising results with multiple LLMs, such as Bard, at their I/O conference. OpenAI has also partnered with Microsoft to develop innovative LLM solutions. In addition, the open-source community is making significant contributions to the development of LLMs, as seen with projects like Vicuna.
