What a stupid question.

Will jail for Salman Khan deter wildlife poaching? Thats the most stupid of the questions to ask actually. But still the CNN-IBN dared to ask. Amazing stupidity. Did Sanjay Dutt's imprisonment prevent people from helping mafia and terrorists. Its stupid that the very same people who made huge hue and cry over imprisonment for Sanjay Dutt are considering jail for Salman. Its kind of a hypocrisy to ask for imprisonment for killing a Blackbuck and not for plotting to kill hundreds of Mumbaikars. I just cant imagine the value of life of humans is lesser than the animal. Strange ways of media in India. Will anyone talk??

Game Set Match Won

After two post

http://the100rabh.blogspot.com/2007/08/i-as-blogger-has-affected-someone.html
I finally get to hear what I wanted. The confession of a journalist...NO A 'feature article writer'. Here is what Mrs Priyadarshini Nandy has to say in her post today
And btw, I didnt form opinion on what the TEL guys told me.. It was a feature article and not a journalistic piece. I just wrote what they told me.. if you come and tell me that you have fun at work, I don't know why I should'nt believe you - then, I'd have to mistrust everyone.. What a life that would be!
This statement makes it clear for everyone each of the points I had made in my first post regarding this. Let me make that once more.
  • Do not trust Mid Day as a reliable source of information. You never know when they are writing a feature article and when a real review.
  • Tata Elxsi made up all those stories.
  • Tata Elxsi does not treat employees as it talks about treating them. Thats the reason it has to take the help of feature articles. Comments on my and Priyadarshini's blog are ample indicator of the same.
  • Either there is nothing called Tata Values (it may be one of the illusion created by feature articles) or Bosses at Tata Elxsi have thrown it out of the window( thats why they get the moolah).
  • The author of that has more lies to tell than the truth. She is perfectly suited for reporting Page 3 parties. Please contact her, she will definitely write a very good feature article :-P She still says she was in dark about the truth of Tata Elxsi. Well all I can say is that suspicion should have had risen when people at Tata Elxsi preferred have a few people's picture taken, rather than giving pictures of some event which took place a few days back, if indeed people in Tata Elxsi have fun.
Indian media is sold out to others. This was exactly the feeling when I read all over the media about Sanjay Dutt. He is a bloody criminal who harbored terrorists. But media is portraying him as if he is the next Mahatma Gandhi. Yes he did play the role of Munna who followed principles of Mahatma Gandhi but thats it. He did have conversations with Dawood and other underworld ganglords. He did stage shows for Dawood. So were many others involved in the Bombay Blast which killed so many. After all AK-47 which probably killed a few innocent cititzens of India was found at him home. But media portrays him as a victim rather than a villian. Yes he is a Khalnayak. Probably that transformation was also due to immense power he commands.
I now seriously believe that I should trust bloggers more for reviews than the Mid Day. Thats simply because unlike sponsored posts by bloggers Mid Day does not care to make it clear to the reader if this article has been sponsored. This is the sad truth of media today. I hope Mid Day makes it a point to highlight in its article the fact that they have received some favors to write it. Thats the most ethical thing to do. May God give them right senses.
And as far as the business people are concerned , well their only objective is to make money anyways. So no point of talking of ethics and stuff about them.
Thanks to every who commented on my post as well as that of Priyadarshini Nandy's. You helped me make the noise enough to get to one ear. I hope this noise goes far and wide.

Open Coffee Club, Bangalore...What should we be doing

Last time around I had promised Ramjee about writing a post on Open Coffee Club and my thoughts on how to improve it. So here it is.

Well I feel that OCC is a good concept. I think there may be some other similar motived events happening in Bangalore itself. But surely many do not know about it. One thing could be we could coordinate with those people, if any.

Another thing is that if we are meeting fortnightly then its better we meet with a theme. Lets plan for whats going to be discussed at the meet. The interested audience would definitely be present there. Also it gives the member time to prepare themselves with ideas and questions before hand. This I think is also necessary considering we are going to meet a lot more often.

I loved the one to one discussions that we had as a group after the initial talks. Though they are fruitful but then a starter is required by means of the initial talk. I will give you the example that the introduction laid ground for further discussions at the last meet. I hope you guys will agree with me.

Meeting place as Brewhaha may not be attractive for the poeple there. I think we need to find a better place. I would suggest that if any of the member knows of some college which can provide us with space on a Sunday morning would be good. It would be better if the college is centrally located.

Hari had aid that 10am should be starting time. But I beg to differ. Its really difficult reach any place in bangalore that early on a Sunday morning. Its as good as rushing to office on a Sunday morning.

I really think OCC has got onto a good start thanks to Ramjee and Vaibhav.

Go Firefox go

I had put Google Analytics code on my site. I was just going through it and I found some amazing result. It was related to the Browser usage statistics. Here it is for you.

1. 50.79%
2. 44.13%
3. 2.22%
4. 1.59%
5. 0.63%
6. 0.32%
7. 0.32%

Amazing isnt it. Firefox users pip IE out of the top slot, as far as my blog is concerned. Well my blogs is not all that famous. It definitely has its own audience. In fact a large number of those are new for my site and are from India. And my audience is more inclined towards Firefox. I myself am a big Firefox fan. I run a fully loaded Firefox with something like 39 extensions installed. Now next time somebody says that IE has a larger share then my friend you may be right, but people who surf the net most prefer Firefox more, may be marginally more. I think these are the people who matter the most for advertisers. I believe this. I may be wrong. What do you say. I actually love this portable version of Firefox. List of my favorite extensions is here.

I as a blogger have affected someone and I am not sorry

Well I had written about the bloggers affecting other professionals. I can now very well add one more group of professionals to the list, the journalists. Yes thats another set of people who were the voice of the people, the fourth pillar of democracy are under serious threat. Had it not happened to me I would not have had got impression of that. Blogging is making the voice of the people heard directly without the the "censorship" by the so called responsible people. I had read something utterly rubbish written about life at my ex-Employer, Tata Elxsi. I just wrote my thoughts about it. Of course I would never trust Mid Day on any news, unless confirmed by some other sources. But this blog post by the journalist(I just realized its Priyadarshini Nandi who did that awesome job for Tata Elxsi), made me realize the power of blogging. Though I am not a supporter of flame blogs(This would be my first and last post with regard to this thing), I had to write this blog. Because its about truth.

Well after reading her article on Tata Elxsi, I believe she has just been there writing about the Page3 parties happening around for so long. If you do the same at any Page3 party probably you get a lot more blessings. I would say she is a sort of irresponsible journalist. Instead of contacting me or asking me for my opinion she wrote this.
This gentleman seems to be quite upset about what I'd written, claiming that all the FUN Tata Elxsi claims to be having is absolutely untrue. Of course, he didn't bother to take in to consideration that the information I got, could've just, by chance, have come from them. But that's alright, I am right now just amused that someone can feel so defeated by the fact that some people from his ex company had fun while he didn't! Maybe what Elxsi told me was made up too, but then again, isn't he out of the company already, why should he really care?
Well right why should I care. I dont belong to this planet earth. Well there are only these chairs and tables out there. I am out of this company, so is everyone else of this planet earth. Tata Elxsi has got people from Andromeda Galaxy. Those people have a different definition of fun. Anyways they do not read newspapers in English. Bullshit. I just gave my view as she gave hers. The comments on my post are sign that I am not the only one to have a similar view. But she chooses to ignore it completely. Sure she would have got information from them. But when you have people doing a sort of photo shoot for you, that should have had been ample indicator of the time when people at Tata Elxsi have fun. A personal attack is probably one the last ways of defending yourself and the last one also, especially if you are wrong. Next few lines
Yes, ladies, gentlemen and friends, don't read any news paper. Midday, TOI, Deccan, Hindu, HT, Telegraph, Business Standard or any other kind of paper for any kind of news. What's the point anyway? It's just a bunch of silly people trying to take you all for a ride isn't it. And it doesn't make you richer. It doesn't pay your rent. It doesn't put food on your table or make you look cooler in front of all the men and women you want to impress.
We're just out there to get you - to take you for a ride, because after much consideration we realised that we weren't pretty enough to be on screen, corrupt enough to be a politician or smart enough for any other profession...
Well you can pretend to be intelligent but not witty. Sure I dont know if anyone would trust someone knowing that the same person had backstabbed earlier. At least I would not. If a person back stabs someone else and I know of it. Well I can be assured that someday it will be me. I do not trust that person. I do not trust Mid Day anymore because of the same reason. But I still trust TOI, Deccan Herald, The Telegraph and the Statesman. I am not really a fan of other newspapers so would not comment on that. But if they report something that affects my life, sure they will get into my DO NOT READ/BELIEVE list. But I am amazed by the way she defended her lies. I am impressed. Mrs Priyadarshini Nandi is the next big icon of truth(really!!!! :-O ). Sure Mid Day has every right to lie about everything. I do not deny that. All I say is that those suckers are not worth trusting for facts. The reasons for me and many others are obvious. Heard of irresponsible journalism, this is the most perfect example. Heard of irresponsible and rash blogging, again we have Mrs Priyadarshini Nandi as the perfect example. So as I said it earlier, read Mid Day only for masala news. Never believe that you are reading the truth. That might just be a illusion. And my suggestion for Mrs Nandi is that she should sit at home and read write Mills and Boons or something similar and at night get to those Page3 parties and enjoy reporting those. Better not report anything in the media, provided its more for the fictitious stuff.

PS: Yes the last few comments is not right thing to do but whatever. Readers your comments will sure guide me right.

Update: Her new post clearly suggest that she is a mindless lady. Does not care to see where she is standing. I clearly see no point in responding to her. Seems like she has some underhand tactics to sell her blog, probably same what Mid Day does. No point replying to her. A single minded, sold out person will never try to see beyond. Just and answer to her question why people are there when they did not have fun. Well here is the 2year bond for freshers. Out of the 2000 odd employees around half of the employees are under the bond at any given time. So much so for the fun. After 2 years how many employees decide to stay back is a big question with no definite answers. And yes Tata Elxsi did have a role in me getting my dream job. But then thing which I reported as factually incorrect stand incorrect.

Finally a confession:

How are Bloggers affecting other professionals

Well this is the gist of the talk that I gave at Bar Camp Bangalore 4 or BCB4. I am sorry I am very late for that but at least I am writing ;-)

It does not require some rocket science to say that bloggers are affecting some professionals. Its obvious that butterfly effect will play its role in this world. There are professionals who are really feeling the heat due to the blogging community. Well lets look at things that we, the people read blogs for.
  • Technical Articles
  • Rumours( All kinds)
  • Travel Ideas
  • Reviews
The above is definitely not an exhaustive list. I wish you could suggest me some more. So who get affected by the action of the users. The very first professional who get affected are the technical writers for magazines. But then there is always the hard copy that sells. Probably thats the reason why all the magazines are moving online. They all have a online subscriptions. Sure blogging gives people the power to spread information in a more productive manner. Users do not have to rely on experience of just one expert but you have knowledge sourced from a number of geniuses who have penned their experience.

Rumour Mills definitely work best with the people run, anonymous, super fast publishing. Probably this also lets out the truth in a more democratic manner.

The travelogues are pretty much the most sought after thing on the web. People write personal blogs and tell about the awesome places they have been to. They also meticulously describe the whole experience and to-dos for the trip. How to travel, when to book tickets, motels and what to be prepared for. The travel agents who used to charge exorbitant rates for their worthless service are feeling the heat. The information is flowing in a more democratic manner. The web was supposed to be doing the same thing. But blogging has put it within the reach of the common user to byte his ideas on the net.

Reviews is probably one area where the users are still to have trust in bloggers. The traditional media has the advantage of being physically present so there is an automatic trust in them. Unless some one does really stupid like this. People do not trust bloggers all that much. The reasons are also very obvious, Sponsored Posts. This is a criminal thing to do. You should actually blog only of things that you really feel about. Doing it to make simple money is immoral. But its not thats we havnt heard of things like that happening in traditional media as well. But still its been there for long and so far not so bad. Also the biggest problem with the personal blogs is that if some company gives a real bad service, people will blog about it. Not in the case when they are getting a good deal. Actually people dont have a real incentive to talk about something good. But certainly the reviews are catching one. Once a person has made a good reputation at reviewing something like a movie or restaurants or any other stuff, its another ball game. I dont think anyone waits for Filmfare to give its movie reviews. Nowdays when Times of India has it every Sunday. Better still CNN-IBN and rediff do it on Friday evening itself who cares.

Change is the name of the game. So things will change. New will replace the old. And its for the old to catch on. But the biggest challenge for bloggers is building the trust with its readers and there is no ISI mark or ISO certification that can come into picture here.

Open Coffee Club, Bangalore....A good start

Well this was one event I was skeptical about. I thought may be 10 odd people will turn up. To add to it a few startup people, and probably a VC. But when I reached there, 30mins late, I saw there was a large group. 60 around, thats what Ramjee told me. Anyways after the introductions there was that useless debate on how to take it forward. So many people saying the same thing, in different words obviously. Instead of taking the current thing forward people got lost in future, not very different from what all startup guys look at.
Anyways the real fun started right after the event was over. People actually split into a number of groups. There was more of one to one interaction rather than a formal one. I think that was one of coolest thing out of the entire event. Well I did have interaction with a lot of people. Some of those really stuck out. One was muziboo by Prateek Dayal. I think its off to a good start. Probably he does not make mistakes that most startups do, not having a long term plan to sustain themselves. Also I met Venkat who was having a startup which focused on outsourced works from European countries. Interesting conversation I had with him. Probably in detail later. Mr. Harish from One big web was a pleasure to meet. Then there were Kalyan and Kunal who are starting yet another social networking site with a niche of their own. I found one thing in common, all were looking at web based technologies. I just see the visions of pre Y2K times. No real revenue models in place. Just a web based service started, probably waiting for some Big fish like Yahoo, Google or MSN to consume you up. Really no big dreams that can really compete with the Big Fishes of the Web.
I have some thoughts on what can be done to better OCC or rather my take on OCC. But since its too late today, I will probably do that tomorrow.

What would you do if traditional media gives false information

I had talked about bloggers not being trusted source of information. But its not just the bloggers or the new media which needs trust of its readers. The traditional media too needs it. But the traditional media has to its advantage belief of its reader set to trust mode. But there are several newspapers who are losing their trust each day some readers at a time. The latest one being Mid Day. I am sure that if not anyone else, it has lost my trust. All for this one article which was published on 14th August 2007 on page A21 and A23 in Mid Day, Mumbai.
I being a ex-employee of Tata Elxsi know that this whole article is a fairy tale. The fact of the matter is that all the photos are nothing but a shoot just like for some movie. Tata Elxsi does not promote anything that was quoted in the article. It just seems to have come out of fantasy of the writer Priyadarshini Nandy. I having the first hand knowledge and I know the culture and the environment in which people work there. That itself being one of the primary reasons for me to look out for other opportunities. I am sure that I am not the only one who did so. There would be many. I would request anyone with similar experience to add a comment or a traceback link for the post they might have written. I actually did not plan to comment on Tata Elxsi as such but this article has made me think otherwise. So here it is point wise.
Fist fights are common here and cheating is more than welcome.
Sure they are, as common as snow fall in Thar desert.
“So, we freak out in the bus too,” says Deepak. “Our latest game is rather interesting — people have to balance in the aisle without holding anything, for as long as possible. No one’s gone very far yet!”
Sure I have never seen that happen. I know when we started playing dumb charades in bus, the first opposition came from none other than the HRs themselves. Next we heard from the admin that people dance in the bus. I hardly could understand with the buses bouncing all the time over the potholes of Bangalore, how could anyone stand, leave alone dance. Now I hear this new game. Hmm good imagination at work.
Everyone gets together in the cafeteria, ready to dive at the cake, and rip gifts open.
Rip the gifts open. Dude in my 2 years in Tata Elxsi I never ever saw that happening in cafeteria. May be in those two year I never had a birthday coming(No I am not born on 29th Feb by any chance ). Sure loads of imagination at work at Mid Day.
“At last year’s New Year bash, we organised a contest where employees had to decorate their bay according to the state they came from,” says HR manager, Gurmeet Dugal.
Wow, we have a new meaning to the word bash. A new year bash. I must have been really deeply involved in work to not realize that there was a New Year Bash. I remember decorating, not just my bay but the entire floor, based on the theme chosen by certain individuals. But New Year Bash. Come on. Nothing like a bash exists in the releams of Tata Elxsi.

Now let me come to the pictures in the first page. All the pictures have been taken as a Mid Day exclusives. So are most of the pics in the following page. The pictures which are captioned as competition are actually performances by different people. There goes all the Mid Day credibility.

My only take on this is. DO NOT TRUST MID DAY ON ANY REPORT. Yes thats in caps for obvious reasons. I know for sure that what it reported was wrong. I am very sure that other stories too will be figments of imagination. So if you want some masaledar stories, sure read Mid Day. But if you want information, sure you can look at any other alternatives.

Quota --- Do the ends really justify the means and vice versa

The true goal of the pro-quota politicians has been moved out of the cupboard by the senior advocate K Parasaran, appearing for the Tamilnadu Government. He made the true statement in court today. He said
"They (upper caste) dominated for centuries and now they should suffer"
Here comes the divide and rule policy of the pseudo-socialist politicians of India in full public view. Yes the Brahmins dominated the scene for centuries, now they should suffer. The cruel kings and nawabs must made to beg on the streets of India. They must realize that what they did was wrong. Bloody hell !! Ya thats the place from where you need to get these souls from on earth. What the fucking wrong did these young children do, that they should suffer. Gone are the days when the loan taken by a man continues to be paid by seven generations to come. Today a son is responsible for a loan taken by father. Well in true Deewar style I think I would like to tell Mr K Parasaran,
"Jao pehle us aadmi ko sazaa de kar aao jisne nawab ko goli maari,
Jao pehle us aadmi ko sazaa de aao jisne raja ke bete ka khoon kiya
Jao pehle us aadmi ko sazaa de aao jisne yeah mulk ko 200 saal tak gulam rakha
Phir tum jitna chahoge utni sazza tum upper caste walo ko de dena. "
Has this idiot forgotten the preamble of Indian Constitution which says that all Indians would be treated equally. No Indian is of the lesser kind. I think India first needs to get rid of people like Mr K Parasaran who is not Indian at heart. He has a casteist mentality and if people like these get into positions of power, India is pretty much doomed. I hope people take notice of this. There are angry protests on this issue. Finally this person is kicked out of his post and all quotas be changed from caste basis to need basis. Do you think I am wrong here?

Indians infiltrate Pakistani Airspace -- Additional Ideas to implement

Well we had heard for long from different sources that Pakistani and Pakistan trained terrorists cross the Indian border and infiltrate to create a state of unrest. Also it was a common report that on occasions such as Indian Independence Day or Republic Day or India-Pakistan cricket match there used to cross border firing. But this time around there was something reverse happening. There were no such reports of firing across the border but there was infiltration of Pakistani air space by Indians. No it is not a bird, it is not a plane, it is a kite. With the Indians having the habit of celebrating Independence Day by flying kites. Inspite of Mrs Menaka Gandhi having strict reservations on it because it harms so many birds. But then who cares for BJP now days. Well it seems that Indian tricolour kites are among the many which are flown on the Independence day by thousands of Indians. Why thousands, simply because not all Indians fly kites. Now the point is what can be done with these kites. Ideas (sure you can put your own as comment always)
  1. Send love letter to the girl you are eying since you last saw her near the border.
  2. Send your yahoo chat id. and chat with the person later online.
  3. Send some money(Indian rupees) so that they can know whats the difference between real and counterfeit notes.
  4. Attach an envelope with boldly written on top, "Bomb Inside". Put Mallika Sherawats photo inside.
  5. A sweet poem on love and friendship written on the kite.
These are some of the ideas I have in mind. Please suggest some if you have some others in mind too.

I think everyone knows that it was composed by Ravindranath Tagore. But it was initially composed in Bengali. Later it was translated in Hindi. It was first dung on 27th December, 1911 at the Indian National Congress session at Calcutta. Interestingly there are two versions of it which are often sung. The full or the longer version takes around 52 seconds while the shorter version with just the first and last lines of the stanza is sung for around 20sec.
The english translation of the same is
O! Dispenser of India's destiny, thou art the ruler of the minds of all people.
Thy name rouses the hearts of Punjab, Sindh, Gujarat, the Maratha country,
in the Dravida country, Utkala (Orissa) and Bengal;
It echoes in the hills of the Vindhyas and Himalayas,
it mingles in the rhapsodies of the pure waters of Jamuna and the Ganges.
They chant only thy name.
They sing only the glory of thy victory.
They seek only thy auspicious blessings.
The salvation of all people waits in thy hands,
O dispenser of India's destiny!
Victory, Victory, Victory, Victory to thee.

Independence Day Special -- What Freedom means to me

I saw this particular article on ibnlive.com which talks about people giving their own views about freedom. I know anyways my article is never going to be featured there. Let me put it right here at my own blog. To start from whats is freedom. To tell the truth I really dont know. To realize what freedom is, you must first be in a position to not have it. But thankfully I have been blessed with freedom. I was born in a free country. My parent gave me total freedom to do whatever I wished. I took up the profession of my choice. Unlike some of my compartiates who took a particular profession because they had no other choice or their parents forced them. I have been actually blessed. Now since I have very little idea to what freedom really is I dont really feel all that confidant about blabbing about it, although this blog is meant for that purpose only. But I feel that independence is about doing what you wish to but not hurting or pushing others behind for the want of your progress.
Probably in the pre 1947 era our ancestors struggled because there was a barrier for Indian to do everything. Indian were not allowed in certain coaches or clubs or schools. There was this British club which used to write, "Indians and Dogs not Allowed". Guess where racism has its roots. To say Indian community itself was not racist is not technically correct. They were not racist but castist. Same wine different bottle. After 60 years of political abolishment of all these practices, its sad to see that people are more inclined towards being a called of a certain caste than not. Caste culture has only been fueled further by the current Congress Government and Arjun Singh. Probably the same Congress which at one point in history wanted all Indians to move together is classifying people. The Gurjar violence is an offshoot of this seed of caste based reservation. Closest what I have come to not having freedom has been but for Reservation. Well, when I was in Engineering College and I paid close to 50k as fees because I could not get a rank good enough for free seat. But then I saw that I had a classmate who paid less than 10k. I used to reach college by bus while that fellow used to ride his car to college. He was definitely no more brilliant than me. Had a rank less than mine but still. Thats when I felt, Am I really blessed with freedom or is it that the illusion is strong enough to make me believe that I am independent.
I feel the real independence will come to Indian once we are banned from naming our caste etc. Until that goes on, Freedom is for sure not full. Incompetent people in postions of importance based on caste and creed will only lead to complex web of corruption. Well I hope soon India will be free of all this too.

In the end I would just like to say to all "Jai Hind."

Why we hate certain people instictively

It is just another of those random thoughts that keep coming to me once in a while. I was just wondering how we people instinctively typecast people into good and bad. It is usually that we make a decision within the first 30 seconds according to a research. Yes there is some research please google it out. I did not want to do any time wasting on that I leave that to you. But I am sure that this research exists. I think that a lot of factors come into play when we typecast a person as good, bad or useless crap. Profession being one of them.

Now lets look at some of the professionals who give you an immediate WOW.
  • Doctor
  • Journalist
  • Software Engineer(I believe this because I am one :-)
  • Defence Personnel
  • Sports Champs
  • Teachers
And some that get an instant thumbs down.
  • Police Personnel
  • Lawyers
  • Politicians
  • Boss, probably just yours.
  • All kinds of brokers and agents
The immediate question that came to my mind is that why is that we take people into the given cast. It is really a mind boggling thing that we just hate people because of their profession. But then all reactions of a human is based on previous experiences. So is it that all or most people belonging to a certain profession is bad. Well we call all politician bad and same goes for all other hated professionals. I have friends who are into professions falling into the wrong category, but I know then more closely than anyone else would have had time before they make a decision. So whats the reason. Heres my explanation for this behavior.

Human brain continuously discards information. We do not remember anything more than a few minutes of our day at the night when we go to sleep and with each passing day it just gets eroded more and more. Thats bad is it? No actually its good. We are saved from information overload. Its like we delete old and useless files from our PC once we do not have any more space. The big question is that what to keep and what to discard. Probably our brain has a very good algorithm in place which we are still to decode. Now what happens is we remember only the good experiences. All other bad once are compressed in a manner that we call as typecasting. Our brain subconsciously makes a decision on whats good and whats bad. We also call it instincts. What to do about the suggestion given by the instinct is left to an individual. So if you say someone is bad, its because you had some bad experiences with some lawyers or policemen or the politicians. Your instinct does not tell you about some policemen who did something good to you, but you remember when he made you pay a bribe subconsciously.

I feel this is one of the best ways to deal with a situation. Our brain just deletes all bad experiences so that we actually live a life of good experiences and not in nightmarish memories. Also any dangers that you faced earlier are flagged off as a warning to you. So our brain is actually a very polished piece of work. Whats your take on this thought of mine?

I knew it...Bad Bosses always rock

I have read the Dilbert principle N times. And each time I have read it I have known that most profitable corporations are run not by the smartest of the people but rather the dumbest of the breed. The people who have no regard to others working under them. I have an experience of just 2 years but with added advantage of experience from Scott Adams (This link may not open as typepad is still banned by a few indian ISPs so use a proxy) via his Dilbert series of books, comics and not to mention his blogs, I consider myself competent enough to make comments about it.

Say I give you this hypothetical situation where your boss is good enough to not bug you for anything at all irrespective of whether you do things right or wrong(I believe that everyone goes wrong at some point or the other). Would you do things with all that liberty that is given to your. Would you work your ass off and finish off the job, in process making some stupid mistakes(According to the Hypothesis of Scott Adams, we are all idiots at different points in time, hence we will make mistakes). Or would you just relax and enjoy life. Working just enough to keep things moving and making sure you make no mistakes at all. Actually no work means no mistakes also.

Now lets take another situation. Your boss is a bastard who is just sticking a rod up your ass all the time. In other words he is the true tyrannical boss. Now what would you do? Will you just hurry up, be on your toes trying to keep up with the job. Trying not to look unproductive or sitting on your ass. Making sure all assignments are done well before the deadline even after knowing that the boss is going to change everything that you have done. Even if that means just changing smart quotes to plain quotes(read as dumb quotes). He would still not give you credit for your work instead buzz you off. Will you still try to work hard or just still on your lazy chair with a noise and abuse filter implanted in your ears. Well best thing you can do is be true to yourself while answering this.

I dont see any reason for the industry captains to get together to punish and replace the bad bosses, when the ones at the top are the ones who have been tyrannical all their life. Thats out right stupid. Why would they care about anything as long as the corporation is making good money. A manager who is keeping up with the competition and even leaving them behind, why will they kill such a good manager. They have no incentive and we all know, humans only respond to incentives.

For the poor workers like me , well the only thing you can do is to care less about those bastards and enjoy your life outside the 6x6 cube. Never bring work home. Working late in office sometimes is alright, but never at home. Work efficiently for all the time you are in office. Its good to be on time all the time. Last but most important thing is to take up a job that you love. Never ever work for money. Thats very important. But people in general never do that. Hence have fate less satisfying.

Told you Agents are bad

Well one of the non-tech collective that got a lot of focus was Investors Collective. I too went to get a wind of what is it all about. When it started, it was all fine. He talked about the various investment vehicles available to us. He talked of mutual funds, kinds of mutuals funds and blah blah blah. It all made sense. But then came the big opening. That guys talks of why should we invest. How many invested and made money through stock market. It was a site to see just 3 hands going up. But considering the fact that most had come to take some knowledge of investing, I did not feel uncomfortable with that. Anyways then came the real motive of that elderly speaker. He started making use of the ultimate weapon of mass destruction. The weapon which is most often used by the politicians and insurance agents. Fear, Yes fear is the most devastating weapon. It does not kill a human in true sense but the power of reasoning and understanding, something that really makes us human, is destroyed. You do not see beyond what you are told off. You are basically blinded by the bright pulse of fear. It was weapon that Narendra Modi clearly used in Gujrat. It was used by Bush in US for war on Iraq. It has been used so many times in recent history that people dont even recognize it.
That elderly gentlemen asked about the costs of medical bills in case of hospitalization. And we had big numbers coming in, 1.5 lakhs, 3, lakhs and going upto 4lakhs. Now how much of that is true. I would say 100%. You may have to spend that much for major diseases. But what has that to do with investment. Thats more to do with Medical Insurance. Best of all, I have a company which is already making sure that I get a good Medical Insurance. I definitely not in that loop. And so are most of the Indian who work is some organization.
Then that person came to the topic of cost of having a child and paying for him from conception to graduation. He came up with a magic figure of 50lakhs. I said amazing. My dad has 2 children, so in the past 25 years he had spent a crore just on our education. Then it occured to me that in those 25 years, it means, I have spent over 2lakhs each year. I definately need to have a good look at my expenses. With all Indian IT services having packages around 2lakhs, its definately not sufficient. But I still wonder how I managed my two years in there. Either my maths is bad or that guy was trying to aim the weapon of fear on me.
The next shot was at my cost of retiring. I dont know from where,(I am sure some cocky americans book), he came up with the idea. He says that to continue my life as I live now I need 2 crores. Say I die at 60. Not much. I will have 35 years of life. Now 2crores would make it 5 lakhs a year. I am pretty sure I need an amount much more than that. How much more. Well it depends according to me. It depends on how much I spend on myself. Lets say I have a wife(I hate imagining that) who spends a considerable amount on beautifying herself. Well I am pretty much doomed at that saving level. God help me.
Well I could see the faces of all the people around there. There were like, Oh what will happen. I can only say to those guys is Chill. All that is completely crappy and pessimistic way of looking at life. You do not know whats going to happen in next 20 mins, leave alone 20years. We need to move in the direction of hope and confidence. Fear does more harm than good. Get over it.
Lastly something good came from that session. That gentleman told that all agents have a good percentage of commission. So next time when you have to deal with one, make sure you shamelessly ask for a good discount. And that profession has a lot of money, no wonder even after being a doctor, he switched his profession. Are you thinking about it too?

And I thought Bar Camp was tech related

Well the first impression when you read the wiki about "Bar Camp", I thought it would be all technical with all the geeks talking of the WOW stuff. But as it turned out, it was not all that geeky. It was a whole lot of fun and extreme sporting involved too. There were collectives like
  1. UnBand Collective
  2. Gaming Collective
  3. Investor$ Collective
  4. Bicycling in Bangalore Collective
  5. Bored of Collectives Collective
  6. Psychics Collective
  7. Eating out in Bangalore Collective
  8. Weekend getaways collective
  9. Photo Collective
  10. Bloggers Collective
wow cannot call them technical, can you? Well obviously I could not attend all of those and I dont know if all of them took place in the first place. Let me tell you about some of the collectives that I did attend. Well first of all let me tell you about Bicycling in Bangalore. Well it was one of those fortunate collectives which did not get a room for good. It was held in the place where none could, it was in the corridor. It was just the right place for it. With the the bikes(as the biking enthusiasts like to call the bicycles). Well we had a person(sorry but I just dont remember the name), who cycles once a week to office. And his office is over 7km far. Well I could only say wow thats something. He got a cool bike for 5 and a half grands. And he actually uses it. Then I heard other going to office something like 5 to 17 km away. Man how do they manage in bangalore traffic. Its amazing to hear how do it. But my left eyebrow went up when Kiruba told that he used to do Bangalore-Chennai biking. Hmmmm but there was more to come with people going to North East for biking. That made the right eyebrow come up. Then was the turn of my mouth to hang down when I heard people have also done Chennai-Calcutta biking. Man this is unbeleiveable. Well until I had a look at his bike. It was made in US. It was nothing that could be found in India. It was truely awesome. Those guys are planning to do a Coorg trip in August. Best of times guys. I sure am no this much extreme guy. So guys techies are not supposed to be boring. Do you care to disagree?
